Librarians ConneCT Website Design

Challenge: The group Librarians ConneCT has created four podcast series for different age groups, however it is difficult to find the podcasts efficiently. In addition, the podcasts are geared towards a wide age range, from students in grades elementary through high school,

Solution: Create a website with a mobile first layout that efficiently organizes the podcasts and acts as a central access point for users of different ages and user backgrounds.

Involvement: I designed and created the website using Wix and conducted usability testing. I also created images and written content, as well as cohosted and edited episodes.

End user: students, although teachers and librarians also use the site. Therefore, each podcast has its own page, designed for the targeted age group.

Users can play the podcasts directly from the site. I installed a widget which connects the RSS feed for each podcast. When an episode is added, the website automatically updates to list it as available.

Usability Testing

User Survey

Question 1: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate the usability of the website?

Question 2: Did you have to click too much to find the information you were looking for?

Question 3: Did the website render well in your browser?

Question 4: On a scale of 1 to 10, rate the design of the website.

Question 5: If you could change something about the website, what would it be?

Question 6: Do you have any suggestions for the website or the podcast project?

Question 7: Do you access the website more often on a computer or a mobile device?

Insights

  • Some users suggested reformatting the titling of the episodes. The format was: Podcast Title - Series Title: Episode #, Book Title One and Book Title Two. The widget cut off the book titles, which resulted in the user having to click on the episode link to see what books would be discussed in the podcast. The new format is: S# Ep#: Book Title.

  • Some users pointed out that certain episodes are longer than a single class period. If the podcast creators want teachers to be able to play the podcast for older students in a classroom setting, they should be shorter.

  • Some users suggested adding a transcript to improve accessibility and offer an alternative for those who prefer to read the content provided.
